Then I thought they were some sort of cross between an ant and a wasp...finally, I figured out that it is a solitary wasp.This is the first year I have seen them in our garden.  Unlike their cousins, the social wasps, they rarely sting. trees, this leaf has about 8 eggs, soon some ugly arse looking caterpillars, that incidentally look like bird excrement, will be munching on the leaves (not badly enough to permanently damage the
