Chayote

Chayote is a veggie that tastes like a cross between a zucchini & a cucumber (depending on if it is eaten fresh or cooked). It is a prolific & gorgeous perennial vine here in zone 9. I got a few of these at the grocery store and I am now waiting until they germinate, which they must do while the seed is inside the fruit. That tongue-looking thing is the seed peeking out already to start the process...which can take several weeks. After they sprout I'll just put it in a sunny or semi-sunny spot in regular soil (not picky about soil at all) and it will grow pretty fast.
