Red Bellied Woodpecker

We are back! This graceful bird was perched on one of our banana trees today...I ache to go and work outside but there is lots of unpacking, cleaning and general indoor-type catching up to do before I can go out and play.

I did, however, take a little break to order some plants today. From Pine Island Nursery we ordered dwarf varieties of sapodilla & mango. These should grow not higher than 10/12 feet. If you live in a windy or hurricane-prone area Sapodilla is a terrific choice, both for its sweet fruit and for its extreme wind resistance. I had planted a Jacaranda tree in our front garden, but I will transplant it in the coming weeks to make room for the sapodilla. This is particularly important to me because that is the tree planting spot closest to our house.

From Almost Eden I ordered another Bay Laurel seedling (the best one for cooking and it is on sale at $5.99--reg $7.99), & a few plants for the hummers: cigar plant & Indian pinks. Both will become nice shrubs and are suited for the semi-sunny area in the back garden.
They have a lovely selection of plants available, but if you have kids, chickens, or any other pet (sorry, did not mean to call your kids pets) research the plant on-line thoroughly as they sell a large variety of incredibly beautiful & incredibly poisonous flowering plants. Well, I guess this is good research to do prior to purchasing any plant & it is not an issue exclusive of Eden Gardens. At least they post it within the plant description most of the time, whereas other sites don't.

Both nurseries listed above take immense care in packaging their plants & send what is promised, if not better. I would recommend them any time.

Welcome back! Fantastic pic of the woodpecker! They are one of my favorite birds. We had baby woodpeckers earlier this year. So cute! :)

I am SO not a picture topper!!! LOL

But really, I rarely take pictures of birds. When I go out with the camera, I have a big dog, a 3 yr old and sometimes a 6 yr old with me. The birds get the heck outta there when they see us coming!

I read that you take a lot of your pictures through the window. You know that 3 yr old I mentioned above?? Well, because of her, there are no through-the-window shots here. All I'd get in the pic would be a bunch of smudgy fingerprints.

And we only had 3 baby woodpeckers. :-D
