Inspirational

Something I had saved in my 'favorites' for the longest time, thought I'd share. Enjoy!

I've had this clip in my favorites too. You are right, it is very inspirational. I've been sending the link to all my friends who show interest in gardening. I am especially impressed with her watering system. City water is expensive, but she has managed to grow all this food and avoid a huge water bill. We have a nice well on our property, but we're still thinking of putting in a couple of rain barrels. We are depending on electricity to pump our water, and that can fail during hurricanes.

Hi Mary! This video was just one of the things in my "post later" list...why don't you post yours? That way more people will see it and get inspired to at least have a few herbs or a fruiting tree...

I considered rain barrels...but that is kinda one of the last things for us due to the following:

At least where I am, when it rains it pours...and then it gets HOT. The temps don't usually go down long enough at night to cool the water needed for irrigation (I've tested large containers).

During the rainy season we would not really need them.

During the dry season it does not really rain as much as to keep them full...and besides, our fruiting trees don't need the rain during that time...and the ornamentals take care of themselves.

During hurricanes they can be a bit of a danger zone for us, as the only spot I have to put them on is right beside our home.

So, for us, it is sort of a last on the list item. But if I lived in an area where the water did not get scolding hot just sitting out there I would most definitely put it first on my list.

I think you live in a part of FL where it is slightly cooler than me, right?

Anyway, sorry for the rambling! :-)

Yes, I think we don't get as hot as you do, but hot enough - 91 is average in summer. You are right about the rainy vs. dry season - when it rains, it pours; then it's dry as a bone for months. We haven't seed a drop of rain here in almost a month now. Burying a barrel does keep water cooler, but you'd have to have a pump to get it out.

We water our hydroponics with a barrel that is buried in the ground. The water stays warm in winter and cool in summer that way. This would also avoid the problem of the barrel becoming a projectile during a hurricane.

Oh, I was trying to figure out how to put the video on the right side column. I never did, then forgot about it...

Easy!

Follow these steps from each of the blog's menu:

1. Customize
2. Layout
3. Add a gadget
4. HTML/Java Script

Then:
5. Go to your YouTube video
6. Look on the top right (well almost the top) where it reads "embed" or "embeded"
7. Copy the gibberish onto your HTML/Java Script

You may have to look carefully at the code, and where it reads "width" you may have to make the number smaller if it does not fit your blog's sidebar.

Good luck!

Whoa, you got a nice system going on with your water barrels!

I am jealous! Yeah, if I told hubby to help me dig a hole to China in order to store the barrels--with all the projects we already have--he'd have a heart attack! :--)

Thanks for the info though, it is possible we can do that in a few years...
