Solitary Wasp

At first, I thought these guys were gigantic flying black ants. Then I thought they were some sort of cross between an ant and a wasp...finally, I figured out that it is a solitary wasp.

This is the first year I have seen them in our garden. Unlike their cousins, the social wasps, they rarely sting. Another good thing about these guys is that they larvae feeds on, among other things, grubs! So if you see them in your garden, let them be. They are not known to be a problem maker in Florida gardens.
